Guaranteed Whale Watch Tours from 5 Departure Locations
The first full day whale watching tour of its kind, with the backing of the industry’s best guarantee.
New for 2017! The Island Explorer 4 is moving to the beautiful waterfront community of La Conner, offering an 8 hour full-day guaranteed whale watch tour with a stop for lunch on an island. This is the first tour of its kind that Island Adventures offers with a 60-90 minute stop for lunch. On most days, we’ll pull into Lopez Island and visit the Lopez Islander Resort for waterfront dining at the Islander Bar and Grill. On days that tides do not allow access to Lopez, our tour us set up to stop at any of the other San Juan Islands.
The La Conner tour is set up to have an exceptionally high sighting success rate. Unlike other tours with a stop for lunch, we do not have a rigid schedule on where we need to stop. This gives us the ultimate flexibility in guaranteeing whales! We typically see a variety of whales and wildlife including resident orca, transient orca, minke, gray, and humpback whales.
The San Juan Islands are not only recognized as a National Monument, but are regarded as one of the best places in the world to watch killer whales (orcas) in the wild. Resident killer whales frequent the waters and forage on fish – specifically salmon. Transient killer whales look very similar but have entirely different diets. Transients prefer marine mammals – seals, sea lions, and harbor porpoise. When we’re on scene with some transients, it can turn into National Geographic unplugged!
Island Explorer 4
The Island Explorer 4 is 85' long, 22' wide with many of the same great features: large heated cabin, full walk-around lower deck, and huge upper viewing deck. Island Explorer 4 is the favorite boat for many of our guests; she is quick, very maneuverable, and can go places that other larger vessels cannot. Her shallow draft allows her to navigate narrow passages making her perfect for our La Conner tours. Experience the unplugged version of the San Juan Islands aboard the spacious Island Explorer 4!
- Outside rail viewing space on one side of the boat for all guests
- Indoor heated seating with restaurant-style booths
- Two viewing decks for an incredible vantage point over the water, great for photography
- Galley with limited but tasty menu. Guests are encouraged to buy lunch on our stop!
- 84 foot monohull with speeds capable of 16+ knots, perfect for the San Juan Islands
- AED defibrillator onboard with highly trained/qualified staff and crew

Where will we go on the trip?
When whales are in the center of the map, most companies do see them – we just get more time. When the whales are up north or out west, the Island Explorer fleet are often the only American boats watching whales
Because of our vessel speed, size, and duration of our tour, we're able to guarantee whales. Often times, whales can move up to 100 miles in a 24 hour period. Every day is a new adventure, but rest assured that you're choosing the company with the highest whale sighting success rate in the area.
Whales have been spotted on 6431 of 6630 tours since 2002. No other company compares.
La Conner Evening Tour
Our guaranteed whale watching tours have made us the #1 whale watching company in the Pacific Northwest, but our specialty tours offer a chance to enjoy a few hours on the water. New for 2017, our La Conner Evening Deception Pass Tour offers a 2.5 hour wildlife tour under Deception Pass with beer and wine available for sale.
"Great company with knowledgeable, helpful staff"I researched quite a few whale watching companies in the Seattle area before selecting this one. We traveled with them for 3 days in a row - 2 days out of Anacortes and 1 day out of Port Angeles. We found the staff in both locations to be helpful, knowledgeable, and just as excited to see the whales as we were. I highly recommend this company. We will be back.

La Conner is known to have some of the best weather in the San Juan Isalnds. In the summer months, the temperature averages between 60 and 80 degrees fahrenheit. Even though the weather can feel warm on land, we always recommend bringing layers – sweatshirts and jackets – as it feels 10-20 degrees cooler on the water. Rain doesn’t have a negartive impact on our tours as our excursion vessels are set up to go out in the elements and have lots of indoor space and cover.
